4.0 Web Framework Delivers Wide Horizons

There are big projects, and then there are gigantic projects, like leading the upgrade of the entire UNL website into a new look and feel with UNLedu Web Framework 4.0 – Wide Horizons (4.0). It wasn’t easy. And by no means – not by the longest of shots – was it the work of University Communication alone. But, over the course of more than a year, UComm worked with the Web Developer Network and communicators and leaders campuswide to advance UNL’s web presence.

The move to version 4.0 was a significant shift in design – most notably extending to the full width of browsers – which meant a complete review of content was in order. In other words, the new design created opportunities to display content in engaging new ways, but it also threw down the gauntlet for content creators and curators. Well, the content folks have responded – with attractive new photos and new bands of copy leading users to academic programs and Admissions and Graduate Studies.


On one strong design template, academic colleges have shaped their web presence in a variety of ways. The common threads in overall structure and navigation make usability easier for key audiences, regardless of the device (mobile, tablet or desktop). The unique approach to their content reflects each college’s priorities.
