Nebraska became a member of the Big Ten Conference on July 1, 2011. The athletic conference is broken into East and West divisions.

Don’t hyphenate Big Ten: It should be “Big Ten Conference.” The numeral 10 is never used.

Acceptable for describing a person’s race (note upper/lowercase). Before indicating a person’s race, be sure that to do so is pertinent and necessary to the story. Be sensitive to individuals’ personal choice.


Blackboard

This is a proprietary name for the My.UNL web portal that allows electronic access to course materials, allows instructors and students to post syllabi, articles and papers, pdfs; allows students to email one another and have discussion boards, post announcements, etc. Most often used by faculty and students, it requires a username and password for login.


Board of Regents

An exception to AP style. The governing body of the University of Nebraska central system/administration as established by state of Nebraska laws. The board consists of eight members elected by districts and a student representative from each of the university’s four campuses.

The board’s official name is the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Acceptable on second reference: the regents.

Acceptable until 18th birthday is reached. Use man or young man afterward.


Business, College of

Formal name for the business college. The more informal “business college” would be written this way. Formerly known as the College of Business Administration.
